“The party’s over, fellas“
“There was a time when you could make me laugh at will,
And you can do it still,
But never is it for the right reasons…“
The few genuine laughs that Grown Ups 2 provides can’t prevent it from amounting to the equivalent of the CGI piss sprayed in Adam Sandler’s face during the first scene of this very unfortunate film. I honestly have no idea why anyone still finds this guy funny, nor why this film made more money in its theatrical run than I will in my entire life. GU2 is what appears to be the Squeeze of summer blockbuster movies, a collection of debris found on the cutting room floor, assembled haphazardly and with a complete lack of regard for comic timing. In this maelstrom of cringey incidents, characters randomly surface with the sole purpose of adding nothing to the film before disappearing for as long as it takes you to forget about them – at which point they’ll return for another round of unfathomable uselessness. The only fair way to summarize the plot is that it begins innocuously and spazzes out for two hours, the arrival of the ending being the only reward the viewer gets. That’s unless you’re amused by the idea of a forty year-old man-child farting his way through an eighty-million dollar investment, in which case you should probably go fuck yourself.
If there’s one thing Grown Ups 2 is good at, it’s arguing for a cull of the ceaseless Sandler output that is steadily getting worse and worse. Fun fact: don’t watch this film. Watch this six-second clip of a goat instead, it’s a far more enjoyable experience.
