White House Down

“No incendiaries inside the White House!

5.4

I won’t pretend this film isn’t preposterous, but I also won’t pretend it isn’t a shiteload of fun. Take every action movie trope you’ve ever seen and arrange them all in order, occasionally executing with proficiency; or alternatively, take Die Hard and change the setting to the White House. It has the same kind of skilled, sophisticated villains, but not so sophisticated that they don’t make stupid mistakes at all the most crucial moments. There’s even a character designated for a salesman-like delivery of cheesy lines. And despite the fact that it really overstays its welcome with its sickly patriotism, it’s hard not to feel exhilarated during the detonative action sequences, all of which are teeming with bloodless one-shot kills, near-fatal encounters and funny one liners from an Obama-esque Jamie Foxx – everything typical, but possibly self-saving in its self-acknowledgement. Without having anything feasible to say, and by taking all the most predictable routes to all the most predictable outcomes, White House Down is the kind of film that’ll eventually become a Film4 staple on the level of Law Abiding Citizen. It’s not world class cinema; it’s not even world class kitsch. It thrills and does little else, but it thrills well, and consistently remains afloat despite its threats to bomb out into sub-par territory.
